It really did hit the nail on the head for me. I think I really did pull back from being "good" so that others wouldn't feel uncomfortable with me. And I remember my family telling me at the time that they liked me better when I was "being myself". That meant they liked me better when I was being like them and being like they wanted me to be. And I bought into their program too! A thought occurred to me as you were saying, "Again, I couldn't let it in. I couldn't accept the very thing we all need, which is validation." Perhaps not only "looking for the good" is what we need to do, but "letting the good in", accepting it, and believing it, is also what we need.

I understand what you are saying about how you felt after your speech where you were questioning yourself about who do you think you are, etc. I've had those moments. I've found Mandea's speech 'Our Deepest Fear' always puts things into perspective for me:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Keep writing, Jo Ann, especially if people are finding your experiences are helping them. I know it is for me. :)Julia Madeleinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02770857960024041136noreply@blogger.com
